Meredith Celebrates Old Home Day!

Meredith became a town in 1768, shaped by farming and sawmills. Like many New Hampshire towns, Meredith saw its population decline in the late 1800s as people moved west or into industrial cities.

To bring people back, Governor Frank Rollins launched Old Home Day in 1899, encouraging communities to celebrate their heritage and welcome former residents home.

Meredith has always embraced its tradition of parades and gatherings — from winter carnivals and July Fourth, to Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and the Bicentennial. In 2025, we proudly revived Old Home Day after a 70 year hiatus, renewing a tradition that honors community, history, and celebration.

2026 Meredith Old Home Day Theme

This year’s Old Home Day carries the theme “Honoring Yesterday, Celebrating Today,” honoring our unique history at the head of Lake Winnipesaukee and celebrating our place as a notable town to visit in New England.

This evolution comes from inspired and creative investors like John Bond Swasey who, beginning in 1809, developed a canal to run the first mills in our town, attracting new residents and businesses to the village. Another visionary, Rusty McLear, repurposed the canal and mill buildings in1984, turning Meredith into a thriving tourist destination.

Visitors from around the world come to experience our incredible lake front and charming Main Street, where the canal remains a centerpiece.
